Group Descriptions
LEGO Group (Above Average Language Level)
Play with Lego whilst learning social skills in a group. Skills include working as a team, sharing ideas, following other’s plans, being flexible, asking questions and commenting in conversation.
Superflex Level 1 Group
The goal of the Superflex curriculum is to give kids a fun, inspiring approach to increase their social and behavioural flexibility and, in turn, improve their self-awareness and social skills. The idea behind the concept is that we all have a superhero in our brains named “Superflex,” who is continuously fighting the Team of Unthinkables (a variety of unexpected behaviours), which might try to prevent us from being effective social thinkers. The Very Cool Five-Step Power Plan and other Superflexible Strategies, such as how to recognise one’s own Team of Unthinkables, will be taught to kids.
Superflex Level 2 Group
The goal of this group is to build on the knowledge taught in Superflex Level 1. Sessions will focus on using superflex in everyday life. In group we will continue to build on these pre-learned skills whilst learning new ones.
PEERS Group
The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) is world-renowned for providing evidence-based social skills treatment for autistic adolescents.
Read morePeer groups aim to teach adolescents a variety of important social skills, including:
- Conversation.
- Sharing and turn-taking.
- Compromise.
- Appropriate assertion with peers.
- Language in play/sport.
- Ways to form friendships.
LEGO Group (Delayed Language Level)
Children in the Lego group will have the opportunity to learn important social skills while having fun building Lego designs. Skills include turn-taking, sharing, listening, building language, teamwork, shared attention and problem solving. This is an easy going social group that encourages children to learn at their own pace and create meaningful relationships with others.
Play Based Skills Group
This group will focus on building functional play skills, participation in a range of activities, imaginative play and peer interactions. The group will utilise the evidence-based program Learn to Play by Karen Stagnitti.
Older Girls Group
The older girls group is designed to be a safe and encouraging place for girls on the spectrum to learn the skills to increase their ability to socialise and maintain friendships, use social language and reduce their anxiety around socialisation with others. This is done through video modelling, play and arts and crafts activities. Each fortnight a topic is covered that incorporates the principles of Social Thinking. The group involves arts, crafts and games.
Younger Girls Group
The younger girls group is designed to be a safe and encouraging place for girls on the spectrum to learn the skills to increase their ability to socialise and maintain friendships, use social language and reduce their anxiety around socialisation with others. This is done through video modelling, play and arts and crafts activities. Each fortnight a topic is covered that incorporates the principles of Social Thinking. The group involves arts, crafts and games.
High School Transition Group
The High School Transition Group will be a reoccurring fortnightly group providing opportunity for neurodivergent young people (autistic, ADHD, intellectual disability etc.) who are preparing to transition or have just transitioned to high school. The group is best suited for tweens and teens in Grade 6 or Year 7. Group activities will centre around social identity, navigating teenage social difficulties, high school expectations, independence skills, as well as mental health strategies for navigating the teen years.
4 Year Old Group
This is a kinder group program targeting children who are due to start school in 2024. This group will initially start in term 1 as a social learning group focussing on social skills, learning new routines, following the group plan, understanding that we all have thoughts and feelings and keeping our body in the group. From term 2 it will continue to build on these skills and the children will start to learn the pre reading skills around letter and sound identification, pre writing skills, drawing skills, cutting skills and learning how to complete table top activities similar to that in prep.
Read moreThis will help the children to pre learn some of the prep year so they can spend the additional time needed to adjust to the school setting. This group is based on the best practice approach and is an evidence based program for teaching children to read. Handouts and homework for home and kinder will be given each session so you can support your child out of sessions.
Siblings Group
This group is designed for siblings of children with a disability who are impacted by the family life. The group will run Thursday 4pm on a fortnightly basis at our North Street, Ascot Vale clinic. The age range to attend the group is 8 – 15 years. The goal of this group is to support siblings by being able to take a holistic view of disability. They will be able to discuss the impact on their lives and how they feel about the family dynamics in a supportive environment. The children will learn key strategies for self-care, they will also build on strategies for safety and wellbeing in their own lives. This is an opportunity to be heard in an environment around others that are experiencing the same challenges.
Games Group
This group is designed for children between 8 years and above.
Games group is a social learning group led by two provisional psychologists, Abbey and Georgina. Children will learn foundational skills such as turn-taking, following rules and joint engagement. There will be a strong focus on sportsmanship and being a fair player.
Read moreThe group members will be prompted to make comments towards other children throughout the game, building social skills and peer connections. Flexible thinking and problem-solving will be encouraged and modelled by the psychologists. Most importantly, children will have lots of fun while engaging with their peers.
